Heart disease is the number one killer of Americans. Its toll is nearly equal to the number of deaths from all other causes combined. You may be able to keep your childs name off a long list of heart disease victims if you can teach him/her the right health habits and attitudes early on. You can't begin too soon!
Early Beginning
Heart disease often begins in childhood and gets worse through the teen and young adult years. The disease can exist without any visible symptoms until middle adulthood. What can be detected - even in young children - are certain conditions that raise the risk of heart disease in adults. These are high blood pressure and high levels of blood cholesterol.
Early Prevention
It may be possible to prevent heart disease if steps are taken early. Many risks related to heart disease are affected by what you eat, how much you exercise and how you care for your heart. Your child is already forming these lifestyle habits. Once formed, they are hard to change.

Encourage Your Child. Praise him for doing things that help the heart, such as eating healthy foods and exercising.
Model a Heart-Healthy Lifestyle. Your child learns from your attitudes, your behavior, your lifestyle. As a parent, you are a model for your child. The best way to help build postive attitudes and behavior about food, physical activity and rest is to practice what you preach.
